Abstract:
Located along the southern coast of China, Wenchang Area, Hainan Province has become a convergence of overseas Chinese cultures, thus being hailed as the showcase window of the local characteristics of the Hainan International Free Trade Port and China's traditional ethos. To explore the factors affecting residents' sense of place can provide reference for the protection and revitalization of historic district with Hainan characteristics. Based on semi-structured in-depth interviews and questionnaires with local residents in the arcade historic district of Puqian Town, this study has obtained fourteen key factors and six core categories affecting the sense of place. Among them, regional spirit, native elements and development opportunities have a positive impact on the continuation of residents' sense of place, while unreasonable protective measures, survival and development dilemma are the leading forces to weaken residents' sense of place, individual factors of residents have both positive and negative effects. This study puts forward strategies to repair residents' sense of place from four levels:the survival of regional spirit, the guidance of government departments, the implementation of basic problems and regional tourism development, so as to serve the urgent continuation of traditional spirit, the protection of historical and cultural heritage and the revitalization of regional development.
